It’s Kelly Russell here to give you the 411 about exercising our power of choice – peace versus attack. As Election Day and Veteran’s Day both fell within the last week in the U.S., this blog is a live teaching I did on that subject at the Teachers of God Foundation’s Friday A Course in Miracles group last week.
I was inspired to look at the symbolism of these two significant days from the standpoint of A Course in Miracles.
Election Day: Peace or Attack?
The topics of both political campaigns and war bring into our awareness the association of attack, competition, power, battles, combat, winning and losing – all ideas of separation based on the egoic platform of fear. I talk in the video about one specific demonstration of making a brother wrong – negative campaigning. (I also bust myself for being in total judgment about it and making MY brothers wrong for making their brothers wrong!)
Certainly, political campaigns and elections can bring up fear thoughts:
What if this individual gets elected?
What if that party gains a majority?
Basically, how is my life going to suck in the future if this or that outcome happens?
But if we make decisions from a place of fear, we are already setting ourselves up for that outcome to suck.
A Course in Miracles teaches us,
“I am responsible for what I see. I choose the feelings I experience, and I decide upon the goal I would achieve. And everything that seems to happen to me, I ask for and receive as I have asked.”
We are told in that sentence that we have ownership for our existence here, and we can choose to see the world with Spirit as our guide, or with the ego. If we are choosing with Spirit’s vision, we can have a great experience and a happy dream no matter who gets elected or what appears to be happening in the world or in our lives. If we choose to see through the eyes of the ego, it will feel more like a nightmare, and our fears will play out probably worse than we could have imagined. AND, it’s what we want.
Why would we want that?
Projection makes perception, which means that what we see in the world comes directly from what we project onto it.
As the Course states,
“Perception can make whatever picture the mind desires to see. Remember this. In this lies either Heaven or hell, as you elect.”
Why wouldn’t everyone choose Heaven?
It’s a fair question. It’s because choosing hell – the hell of judgment, criticism, making people wrong, thinking we know how things are supposed to transpire – including who should or should not be in office and what they should do while they are there – and then being angry when they don’t, all allows us to remain in our self-assigned role of victim, instead of accepting the Truth of ourselves as the powerful creators we are as the collective Son of God. It affords us the ego luxury combo package of being mad but powerless to change anything.
If we want to have a happier experience, we have to give up attack, and choose peace instead – which we can’t do that without the help of Spirit.
As the Course tells us,
“I could see peace instead of this.”
In my talk I discuss how we can actually do this.
I hope you will find something in today’s video that resonates with you, that moves you to choose once again, or to ask to see a situation differently. If so, I’d love to hear your comments…. please go ahead and leave one below.
Thank you so much for being with me today, and joining with me in this powerful endeavor.
As the Course says,
“Seek not to change the world. But choose to change your mind about the world.”
I appreciate your being a veteran of lifetimes with me, and I elect YOU as my co-creator of Heaven on Earth.
I love you,
Kelly

Kelly, I was touched by your readings from the beginning and end of the Constitution. It is not important to me to dissect what I think was in the minds of those who wrote it, but to use those words as greater inspiration for myself.
I do the same thing with Jackie Wilson’s “Higher & higher” R&B song from the 60’s.
Hi Robert! Thank you for your comment – and I LOVE that song! Keep lifting your bro’s higher and higher with the light of Spirit that is the Truth of you! ❤️
Kelly!! You have no idea how much I needed this message! I needed to remember that I can choose again and see a situation differently. I can trust that Spirt has the situations that cause me worry and I can let go. What a relief! You amaze me and I feel so fortunate to have you and the TOG helping to redirect me when I get lost. Words can’t express how thankful I am. <3
Hi Stacy! You are the reason I am inspired to do this. Thank you for watching, for writing, and for your willingness! 😊
You have no idea how much I needed to hear this tonight. I got very frustrated at work over issues here and at home and let my ego run with it. Thank you for posting this. It helped me to choose not to fall into the victim role with that I can choose love over fear.
