Rocking Your Inner GPS: Driving Around an Upside-down World Without Falling Off

“There is no order of difficulty in miracles. One is not “harder” or “bigger” than another. They are all the same. All expressions of love are maximal.” (T-1.1.)

Yo My Fellow Divinely-Guided Road Warriors!

So, I recently got a new car. Ok, I just heard that full-body eye roll and the “Omg, LAME! The whole world is completely f*cked up and she’s talking about her car for God’s sake!” but stay with me. This car has a crazy-ass on-board guidance system. Not just a GPS, more like there is a Force driving it (I call it my Jedi ride.) It does automatic course-correction and blind-spot notification; it reduces my speed, makes headlights brighter, decides what setting wipers need to be on, doesn’t let me lane-drift, and stops me from running over people and things or backing into them.

It literally assists me in staying the course it knows I’m on, and helps me to not jeopardize others and myself while doing so. Like my Guide speaking to me. (It even says WEARE1 on the license plate in case I forget Who’s really at the wheel.)

With regard to the events the world is presently journeying through, there is a great deal of both fear and love mongering out there, and the choice we make for which guide we follow will dictate our experience of this and everything else.

When I look at the way these things are happening, amidst all of what has been unfolding in the dream of the world – I see the elegant hand of Spirit’s direction in all of it. Not in causality, of course, but in the intelligence of the guidance we are receiving in directing our response – provided we do not drive off the road into fear.

As a coach, part of what I do is help people to cultivate their relationship with their Guide, their Inner Teacher, the Voice for God in their minds. This is critical, because that Voice is the true Coach. Whatever I might be directed to say or do is simply as a conduit.

People ask me a lot about guidance – they think they aren’t getting it, they can’t hear it, they feel alone, like no one is watching, or paying attention, or helping them.

But that is so far from the Truth. I am living proof of it, and I’m not special. We are all being guided, at every moment. Our intuitive system is spot on, we are naturally able to hear the Voice for God – the Holy Spirit in our minds – speaking to us. We just have to tune ourselves to the right frequency, have the correct channel on. And not have every other device and appliance on drowning out the sound of it. Especially not those broadcasting fear 24/7.

So, prior to all of what is now going on pandemically in the world of form, I have had some things happen within the past several months that feel kind of big. Things like my loved ones having serious health issues, my packing up and moving to a new residence in a new state, dealing with a significant tax situation, having to unexpectedly close and reopen all of my bank accounts, needing to get the afore-mentioned car – and at times these things felt overwhelming, scary insurmountable, and like nothing in is my control.

Probably kind of like a much smaller scale version of how many of us feel right now.

Yet I can say that despite it feeling difficult and challenging in the moment, when I asked for guidance, and made space for and allowed it, beautiful solutions were presented very gently and almost effortlessly. Fantastic medical treatment for my loved ones, my home – which many of you know about from my blogging about that incredible expedition – my car, a rocking tax attorney, awesome angels at the bank, a rearranging of the way I can now work to accommodate the containment situation – all showed up through the direction of Spirit without my having to do much other than following the lit-up breadcrumbs.

The guidance we are all collectively receiving regarding our response to the coronavirus is no different.

I see guidance as being provided to us on two levels – first, how to awaken to the Truth, so that we no longer experience the dream that we are in the world – and second, managing our experience of the dream while we are in the process of waking up.

I believe that access to both lies in the two most important practices we can employ.

Whenever I work with a new coaching client, I always ask the same two questions: 1) what is their daily spiritual practice and 2) what is their forgiveness process. I see these as necessary prerequisites to cultivating the ability to hear guidance. If we don’t have both of these things solid, we are not gonna be on the sparkly yellow brick road heading back to the Land of Oneness  – where we are in a constant state of joy, peace, love, unity and bliss to the point where it becomes like one long eternal “O” – anytime soon. Nor will we feel the connection to our inner GPS - or God Positioning System – our compass for navigating the world.

Below I describe my own practice. It is also available as a downloadable recording or PDF in the Vault area of Evolve, the Teachers of God membership site. Members can access it here.

I begin my day in quiet, (but I go get my coffee first. Coffee meditation is the bomb.)

I surrender my plans and decisions to Spirit. I ask for guidance. I put my perceived problems on the altar and let them go to into the Light of God, trusting that they are resolved. I express gratitude both for blessings I have received, and for what I have not yet seen evidence of. I keep coming back to trust.

I spend time in communion with God.

I have found that when I write, “Good Morning Spirit, what do you have to tell me today?” and I just start writing, an answer is always given. What winds up on the page is definitely not coming from me – I can feel the difference between communication and a regular journal entry. It’s not a response from ego because there are never any fear-based thoughts being conveyed. It is always loving and reassuring, often presents solutions, sometimes calls bullshit on my ego, and usually reiterates that all is well and in the process of unfolding and that I just need to trust. Sometimes I write back – asking questions, commenting, maybe pushing back – and I always receive an answer. It becomes like a dialogue.

Although we are assured that guidance is constantly flowing to us, the truth is we can also definitely block our awareness of it. Some of the obstacles I notice that interfere with my ability to be conscious of guidance are when I am in fear, or pissed off, or distracted (like by being in fear or pissed off) or when I am confused by having too many thoughts or am moving too fast and am therefore not conscious or present. But when I actually slow myself down and pay attention, it is nothing short of amazing.

Even the stuff that seems negative on the surface. Sometimes I observe things happening a way that feels like the opposite of what I have asked for. Like, wtf? How is this in any way supposed to resemble what I said I wanted or needed?

But when I take a step back, allow myself to breathe, and stop judging the situation, and let myself think that maybe Spirit might possibly know what it’s doing, what is revealed to me is a far greater wisdom at work than I am capable of. As I look with my Guide, I can see why things lined up in a particular way. Not that Spirit is causing bad things to happen (although my ego is going, “Yes He is! Yes He is! Because you’re guilty!”) Rather, I understand that things are being brought into alignment, aspects that need correction are highlighted, places that need repairing are showing themselves, stuff is coming up to be healed – all of which, I am realizing, are necessary precursors to my being able to experience whatever it is I have asked for.

Perhaps this is what is happening in the world as we take steps to contain the COVID-19. Rather than isolation and social distancing – separation ideas if I ever heard them – we can reframe them as surrounding fear with love. If we are asking for peace, for healing, for unity, for Oneness – maybe this quieter time of increased solitude, less distraction, decreased busyness, more time spent in a different way with our loved ones and our communities – is preparing us to receive that for which we have asked.

After all, our GuideBro Jesus did walk the illusory Earth a few times as a dude, and I’m pretty sure He knows something about getting out of it. Not to put too fine a point on it, but His teaching from Workbook Lesson 155, “I will step back and let Him lead the way” kind of says exactly that.

Even as He guides us toward what is ours to do in the dream, he is waking us up.

And what is involved in waking up?

It’s doing what our part is in all of it.

As the Course teaches us, “

“Once you accept His plan as the one function that you would fulfill, there will be nothing else the Holy Spirit will not arrange for you without your effort. He will go before you, making straight your path, and leaving in your way no stones to trip on, and no obstacles to bar your way. Nothing you need will be denied you. Not one seeming difficulty will but melt away before you reach it. You need take thought for nothing, careless of everything except the only purpose that you would fulfill.” (T-20.IV.8:4)

And so what exactly is our function again? A Course in Miracles tells us that forgiveness is our function, salvation is our function, our happiness and our function are one, and our only function is the one God gave us.

Ummm, so which one is it?

Yes.

It is all of them. They all lead to the same outcome, they are part of the process of awakening. Forgiveness is our function as the Light of the World. It joins us with our brothers and leads us to salvation from the fear that we are separate from God, which is the only problem we have. Salvation from our belief in separation reunifies us with our true state of happiness, which is the only function God gave us.

“I will forgive this and it will disappear.” (W-p1.193.13:4)

Woot, there it is. Let’s put the fun back in function.

Forgive the appearance of what is happening in the dream for the egoic illusion that it is. Ask to see it differently, and then ask for guidance as to what is yours to do in the world of form. Say, as the Course advises us to,

“Where would you have me go? What would you have me do? What would you have me say? And to whom? What miracles would you have me perform today?” (W-p1.170.9:20)

And listen, trusting that you will receive your instructions. Grab your pen and hear that inner dictation – remembering that “God’s Voice speaks to me all through the day.” (W-p1.49).

Thank you for being with me today as we traverse the winding road of this experience together. If anything in this blog has inspired you to open yourself to guidance and allow your inner GPS to be recalibrated, I’d love to hear about it. Please leave me a comment below. I love them and I read every one.

You are so the Light of the World. Shine on!

So much love,

Kelly

  1. Kelly, you are a blessing of expression! Appreciate your time to encourage the Truth for all who read and practice with Faith and Trust. My inner guidance is encouraging we folks sprinkle the spice of “humor” at the illusions of fear when we allow our minds to play the old tapes! Rejoice in each new moment! Happy Day!

  2. So love this and you. Have not yet been able to complete a course in miracles but I feel it coming one way or another.❤🌅

  3. I asked the Holy Spirit how I can receive clear guidance. Along comes this email and your Blog about guidance. It was so very helpful. I joined The presenters series last year and always looked forward to hearing you share your journey. You are so warm and honest. A True inspiration. Thank you Kelly

  4. What a wonderfully written reminder at this time. I have exerted an immense amount of effort in the past month working to achieve a goal. It feels as though the harder I exert effort, the more i am met with resistance, especially with important people in this situation not following through on tasks, responding to emails or phone calls. Maybe this is a reminder for me to step back and let Spirit work its magic for me at this time. I have done more than enough, and I’m now feeling tired.

    Thank you for sharing.

  5. I really love your expression of truth, Kelly. Thank you for being the light of the world like I am!
